Jubilees

Chapter 13

1

And Abram journeyed from Haran, and he took Sarai, his wife, and Lot, the son of his brother Haran, to the land of Canaan. And he went to Asshur and continued to Shechem, and dwelt near a lofty oak.

2

And he saw, and behold, the land was very pleasant from the entrance of Hamath to the lofty oak.

3

And the Lord said to him: "To you and your descendants I will give this land."

4

And he built an altar there, and he offered a burnt offering to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

5

And he departed from there to a mountainous region. Bethel was to the west and Ai to the east, and he pitched his tent there.

6

And he saw, and behold, the land was very wide and good, and everything grew in it, vines and fig trees and pomegranates, oaks and oaks of the Mediterranean and oaks of Moreh and olive trees, and cedars and cypresses and trees of Lebanon, and all kinds of trees of the field, and there was water in the mountains.

7

And he blessed the Lord who had brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans, and brought him to this land.

8

And it came to pass in the first year, in the seventh week, on the new moon of the first month, he built an altar on this mountain, and called upon the name of the Lord: "You, the Eternal God, are my God."

9

And he offered on the altar a burnt offering to the Lord that He might be with him and not abandon him all the days of his life.

10

And he departed from there and went south, and he arrived at Hebron, and Hebron had already been built at that time, and he dwelt there for two years, and he went to the land of the south, to Bealoth, and there was famine in this land.

11

And Abram went to Egypt in the third year of the week, and he dwelt in Egypt five years before his wife was taken from him.

12

Now Tanis in Egypt at that time had been built seven years after Hebron.

13

And it came to pass that Pharaoh seized Sarai, the wife of Abram, so that the Lord smote Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, wife of Abram.

14

And Abram was greatly glorified by reason of his possessions in sheep, cattle, donkeys, horses and camels, and servants and maidservants, and silver and gold in abundance. And Lot, the son of his brother, was also rich.

15

And Pharaoh returned Sarai, wife of Abram, and he sent him away from the land of Egypt, and he journeyed to the place where he had pitched his tent at the beginning, the place of the altar, with Ai to the east and Bethel to the west, and he blessed the Lord God who had brought him back in peace.

16

And it came to pass in the forty-first jubilee in the third year of the first week, he returned to this place and offered a burnt offering, and called upon the name of the Lord and said: "You, the Most High God, are my God forever."

17

And in the fourth year of this week, Lot departed from him, and Lot dwelt in Sodom, and the men of Sodom were exceedingly sinful.

18

And it grieved him in his heart that the son of his brother had separated from him; because he had no son.

19

In that year when Lot was imprisoned, the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had departed from him, in the fourth year of this week: "Lift up your eyes from the place where you are dwelling to the north, to the south, to the west and to the east.

20

For all the land that you see I will give to you and to your descendants forever, and I will make your descendants as the sand of the sea: And even if a man can count the dust of the earth, yet your descendants cannot be counted.

21

Rise, walk in its length and its breadth and know it all; for to you and your descendants I give it." And Abram went to Hebron and dwelt there.

22

And in this year came Chedorlaomer, king of Elam, and Amraphel, king of Shinar, and Arioch, king of Ellasar, and Tergal, king of nations, and killed the king of Gomorrah. And the king of Sodom fled, and many fell by wounds in the valley of Siddim, near the Salt Sea.

23

And they imprisoned Sodom and Admah and Zeboiim, and also took Lot, the son of Abram's brother, and everything he possessed, and went to Dan.

24

And one who had escaped came and told Abram that his brother's son had been taken.

25

And Abram armed his servants, and of his descendants the tithe of the first fruits to the Lord, and the Lord ordained this as an ordinance forever that they should give to the priests who serve before Him, that they should possess it forever.

26

And for this law there is no limit of days; because he ordained this for the generations forever: that they shall give to the Lord the tithe of everything, of seeds, of wine, of oil, of cattle, and of sheep.

27

And he gave to His priests, that they might eat and drink with joy before Him.

28

And the king of Sodom came to him and bowed down before him and said: "Our lord Abram, give us the lives that you have rescued, but let the spoil be yours."

29

And Abram said to him: "I lift up my hands to the Most High God, so that not a thread nor a sandal strap will I take of what is yours, lest you say: I made Abram rich. Save only what the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol and Mamre. These shall take their portions."
