🔊 LISTEN TO CHAPTER

The Book of Jubilees, also known as 'Little Genesis' or 'Kufale', is a pseudepigraphal text of the Old Testament that rewrites the history of Genesis and part of Exodus, with emphasis on the division of time into jubilees and weeks of years. It is canonical only in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and preserved entirely in Ge'ez. The book was originally written in Hebrew around the 2nd century BC and is cited by the Early Church Fathers.

Jubilees

Chapter 30

1

And in the first year of the sixth week, he went up to Salem, to the east of Shechem, in peace, in the fourth month.

2

And there they took Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, to the house of Shechem, the sons of Hamor, the Hivite, the prince of the land, and he lay with her and defiled her, and she was a little girl, a child of twelve years.

3

And he begged her father and his brothers that she might be given to him as a wife. And Jacob and his sons were angry because of the man of Shechem, because he had defiled Dinah, their sister, and they spoke to them with evil intent and made a deceitful agreement and deceived them.

4

And Simeon and Levi came unexpectedly to Shechem and executed judgment upon all the men of Shechem, and killed all the men they found, and did not leave even one remaining. They killed them all in torments because they had dishonored their sister Dinah.

5

And may it never again be done that a daughter of Israel be defiled; For judgment is ordained in heaven against him, that they destroy with the sword all the men of the Shechemites because they have brought shame upon Israel.

6

And the Lord delivered them into the hands of the sons of Jacob so that they might exterminate them with the sword and execute judgment upon them, and that it might never again be done in Israel that a virgin of Israel be defiled.

7

And if there is in Israel any man who wishes to give his daughter or his sister to any man of the descendants of the Gentiles, he shall surely die, and they shall stone him with stones; because he has brought shame upon Israel, and they shall burn the woman with fire, because she has dishonored the name of her father's house, and she shall be exterminated from Israel.

8

And do not allow an adulterous nor impure woman to be found in Israel for all the days of the generations of the earth; because Israel is holy to the Lord, and every man who has violated her shall surely die. They shall stone him with stones.

9

For thus it was ordained and written on the heavenly tablets concerning the descendants of Israel: He who violates shall surely die, and shall be stoned with stones.

10

And for this law there is no limit of days, and there is no remission nor atonement. But the man who violated his daughter shall be exterminated from the midst of Israel, because he gave his descendant to Molech, and acted impiously in violating her.

11

And you, Moses, command the children of Israel and exhort them not to give their daughters to the Gentiles, and not to take for their sons any of the daughters of the Gentiles, because this is abominable before the Lord.

12

For this reason I have written to you in the words of the Law all the works of the Shechemites which they practiced against Dinah, and how the sons of Jacob spoke saying: "We will not give our daughter to an uncircumcised man; because that would be a shame for us."

13

And it is a shame for Israel, for those who live, and for those who take the daughters of the Gentiles; because this is unclean and abominable for Israel.

14

And Israel will not be free from this filthiness if he has a wife from the daughters of the Gentiles, or if he gives one of his daughters to a man of any of the Gentiles.

15

For there will be plague upon plague, and curse upon curse, and every judgment and plague and curse will come if he does this, or hides his eyes from those who commit filthiness, or from those who profane the Sanctuary of the Lord, or from those who profane His holy name. The whole nation will be judged for all the filthiness and profanation of this man.

16

And there shall be no respect of persons nor consideration of persons. No fruit offerings, burnt offerings, nor fat, nor fragrance, nor sweet aroma shall be received from his hands in an acceptable manner. But every man or woman in Israel who does so is a profaner of the sanctuary.

17

For this reason I commanded you, saying: "Testify this testimony to Israel: See what happened to the Shechemites and their sons. How they were delivered into the hands of two sons of Jacob, and they killed them in agony, and this was imputed to them as righteousness, and it is noted for them as righteousness.

18

And the tribe of Levi was chosen for the priesthood, and to be the Levites who minister before the Lord, like us, continually, and that Levi and his sons be blessed forever; because he was zealous to execute justice, judgment and vengeance upon all those who rose up against Israel.

19

And thus they wrote as a testimony in his favor on the heavenly tablets, blessing and righteousness before the God of All.

20

And we remember the righteousness which the man fulfilled during his life, in all the seasons of the year, for a thousand generations they will remember it, and it will come to him and to his descendants after him, and he was engraved on the heavenly tablets as a friend and a righteous man.

21

All these things I have written for you and commanded you to tell the children of Israel, that they should not commit sin nor transgress the ordinances nor break the covenant that was commanded them, they should fulfill them and be engraved as friends.

22

But if they transgress and practice all kinds of filthiness, they shall be engraved on the heavenly tablets as adversaries, and they shall be taken out of the book of life, and they shall be engraved in the book of those who shall be destroyed, together with those who shall be exterminated from the earth.

23

And on the day when the sons of Jacob killed Shechem, a writing was engraved in their favor in heaven that they executed justice, righteousness and vengeance upon the sinners, and this was written as a blessing.

24

And they brought Dinah, their sister, out of the house of Shechem, and they captured everything that was in Shechem, their sheep and their oxen and their donkeys and all their wealth, and all their flocks, and brought everything to Jacob their father.

25

And he rebuked them because they had put the city to the sword.

26

And the fear of the Lord was upon the cities that were around Shechem, and they did not rise up to pursue the sons of Jacob, because terror had fallen upon them.
