The Book of Jubilees, also known as 'Little Genesis' or 'Kufale', is a pseudepigraphal text of the Old Testament that rewrites the history of Genesis and part of Exodus, with emphasis on the division of time into jubilees and weeks of years. It is canonical only in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and preserved entirely in Ge'ez. The book was originally written in Hebrew around the 2nd century BC and is cited by the Early Church Fathers.

Jubilees

Chapter 34

1

And in the sixth year of this week of the forty-fourth jubilee, Jacob sent his sons to pasture their sheep and his servants with them to the pastures of Shechem.

2

And the seven kings of the Amorites united against them to kill them, hiding themselves under the trees, and to take their cattle as prey.

3

And Jacob, Levi, Judah and Joseph were in the house with Isaac their father; because their spirits were in lamentation and they could not leave him. And Benjamin was the youngest, and for this reason he remained with his father.

4

And came the kings of Taphu, the king of Ares, the king of Seragan, the king of Shelo, the king of Gaas, the king of Bethoron, and the king of Maasinakir, and all those who dwelt in these mountains and those who dwelt in the forests in the land of Canaan.

5

And they announced this to Jacob saying: "Behold, the kings of the Amorites have surrounded your sons and plundered their flocks."

6

And he arose from his house, he and his three sons and all the servants of his fathers, and his own servants, and they went against them with six thousand men who carried swords.

7

And he killed them in the pastures of Shechem, and pursued those who fled, and he killed them with the edge of the sword, and he killed Ares, Taphu, Saregan, Shelo, Amanisakir and Gaas, and he recovered their flocks.

8

And he prevailed against them and imposed tribute on them, that they should pay him tribute, five products of the fruits of their land, and he built Robel and Tamnatares.

9

And he returned in peace, and made peace with them, and they became his servants until the day when he and his sons went down to Egypt.

10

And in the seventh year of this week he sent Joseph to know about the well-being of his brothers in the land of Shechem, and he found them in the land of Dothan.

11

And they dealt treacherously with him and formed a plot against him to kill him, but changing their minds they sold him to Ishmaelite merchants, and these took him to Egypt, and they sold him to Potiphar, the eunuch of Pharaoh, and chief of the food, priest of the city of Elew.

12

And the sons of Jacob killed a kid, and dipped Joseph's tunic in the blood, and sent it to Jacob, their father, on the tenth day of the seventh month.

13

And he lamented all that night, because it was brought to him in the late afternoon, and he became feverish with mourning for his death, and he said: "A wild beast has devoured Joseph!" And all the members of his household were mourning and lamenting with him all that day.

14

And his sons and his daughter arose to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted for his son.

15

And on that day Bilhah heard that Joseph had perished, and she died lamenting for him, and she was living in Quafratef, and also Dinah, his daughter, died after Joseph had perished. And these three bereavements came upon Israel in one month.

16

And they buried Bilhah over Rachel's tomb, and also Dinah, her daughter, was buried there.

17

And he mourned for Joseph for a year, and did not cease, because he said: "Let me go down to the tomb mourning for my son."

18

For this reason it is ordained for the children of Israel that they should afflict themselves on the tenth day of the seventh month - on the day when the news that made him weep for Joseph came to Jacob his father - that they should make atonement for themselves with a young goat on the tenth day of the seventh month, once a year, for their sins; because they afflicted the affection of their father with Joseph, his son.

19

And this day was ordained that they should afflict themselves for their sins, and for all their transgressions and errors, so that they might cleanse themselves on that day once a year.

20

And after Joseph perished, the sons of Jacob took wives for themselves. The name of Reuben's wife was Ada; and the name of Simeon's wife was Adiba, a Canaanite; and the name of Levi's wife was Melka, of the daughters of Haran of the lineage of the sons of Terah; and the name of Judah's wife was Betasuel, the Canaanite; and the name of Issachar's wife was Hezaka; and the name of Zebulun's wife was Niiman; and the name of Dan's wife was Egra; and the name of Naphtali's wife was Rasuu, of Mesopotamia; and the name of Gad's wife was Maka; and the name of Asher's wife was Ijona; and the name of Joseph's wife was Asenath, the Egyptian; and the name of Benjamin's wife was Ijasaka.
